Thoughts For The Week

Posted on April 29, 2013 under Thoughts for the Week.

Remember:  having a low opinion of yourself  isn’t modesty, it’s self destruction.  Holding your uniqueness in high regard is not egotism, it is a necessary prerequisite to success.

Sales 101: Frog Eating 101 (reprinted by ‘popular’ demand)

Posted on April 23, 2013 under Sales 101.

Missouri’s Favorite Son once said:  “ ”Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”  The analogy is simple:   look at your ‘frog’ as being your  day’s most important task – the one thing from your ‘to do’ list (and I am assuming that you have a ‘to do’ list) that could have the most positive impact on your life or career.

Brian Tracy took this concept a step further and actually outlines two specific  rules of frog eating:  1)  “if you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first” and 2) if you really have to eat a live frog, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it for very long.”

In her book What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, Laura Vanderkam addresses the frog eating concept this way, “Seizing your mornings is the equivalent of that sound financial advice to pay yourself first.  If you wait until the end of the month to save what you have left, there will be nothing left over.  Likewise, if you wait until the end of the day to do meaningful but not urgent things like exercise, pray, read, ponder how to advance your career or grow your organization, or truly give your family your best, it probably won’t happen.”

I would proffer that most successful people have some sort of morning routine  –  habits they have developed over time.  Do you?

If not, here are some things you might want to consider:

1)  even though it may sound somewhat Zen-like, consider starting each day with 10-15 minutes of positive self talk and creative visualization (think Stuart Smalley from SNL); think about the things you are grateful for; read something positive;avoid the daily dose of ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ on TV; think about the things you’d like to have in your life.

2)  get up 30 minutes earlier (than normal) and exercise; something is better than nothing and the discipline of exercising daily will carry over into your work day

3)  review your day’s ‘to do’ list; set your priorities; eat your “frogs”

4)  eat “breakfast like a king”  -  fruits, proteins, and grains vs. cinnamon rolls and Krispy Kreme

5)  consider creating and reviewing daily a ‘to don’t’  list of  unproductive or negative habits you may have i.e. being around negative people, spending too much time on Facebook, constantly checking your emails, gossiping, etc.

6)  An affirmation is a statement of fact and since your subconscious mind cannot reject what you tell it, make sure  you keep your self talk positive.  Create a journal of positive sayings, read them daily and never forget that you are responsible for building your own self image.

7)  Tell your spouse or significant other that you love them; tell your kids that you are proud of them; reach out and give some encouragement to a friend; be more aware of the tone of your voice (what you say is far less significant that how you say it).

8)  Remind yourself to smile more

9)  EAT THAT FROG!!!!

Have a great rest of the week!!!!

Thought For The Week

Posted on April 14, 2013 under Sales 101, Thoughts for the Week.
Thought for the Week

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed………………………….Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle…………………………..When the sun comes up, you better be running.

Be memorable and remember: The most valuable thing to have is a good reputation, and it’s neither hard nor expensive to acquire one: Be fair. Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be generous. Respect others.

Thoughts For The Week and a Seth Godin Re-Post

Posted on April 8, 2013 under Thoughts for the Week.

Swagger

One way that marketers (of any stripe) make an impact is by displaying confidence. Consumers figure that if a marketer is confident in their offering, they ought to be confident in the marketer as return. We often assume that confidence means that something big is on offer.

The problem with swagger is that if you’re the swaggering marketer, you might run into a competitor with even more swagger than you. When that happens, it’s time to show your cards, the justification for your confidence. And if you don’t deliver, you’ve done nothing but disappoint the person who believed in you.

Substance without swagger slows you down. But swagger without substance can be fatal. Right now, we’re seeing more swagger than ever—but it’s rarely accompanied by an increase in substance…

The rule is simple: it’s essential to act the part. And it’s even more important for it to be real.

As always, thanks for being here, pay it forward, make it a memorable week and remember:  you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!
